Star Wars franchise has had an enormous fan following, and for years they have expressed their frustration on the fact that Chewbacca didn’t get a medal even at the close of Star Wars. Chewbacca played an important role in the destruction of the Death Star. Lucas constantly meddled with his films. He went short for giving Chewbacca a CGI medal and instead decided that Greedo had the worst aim in the galaxy.
Why didn’t Chewbacca get any medal in the first place?
There has been no official explanation for why he wasn’t rewarded for his bravery as a co-pilot. One reason that came up was after Disney gained ownership of the Star Wars franchise. They eventually decided to eliminate from canon the entire expanded universe. They did this so that the viewers and fans couldn’t get a clue of what’s going to happen in the upcoming films, and writers are liberal for the storylines in video games, comics, and books released by Lucasfilm over the years.
While the writers were free to take inspiration from the expanded universe, they were also open to ignore it and to come up with the ideas of their own as long as they didn’t contradict the canon Disney has established. It directly led to Chewbacca never getting a medal. Even though we didn’t pass up an opportunity to delve into the Star Wars Universe, but we dig a little deeper into the saga of Chewie’s lack of a medal.
Strangely, even after George Lucas wrote the film’s novelization, Chewbacca did get a medal during the award ceremony. It then turns out that Alan Dean Foster wrote the book that was based on the many novels on Lucas’ original screenplay. Chewbacca then was awarded a medal for his part of destroying Death Star.
When did Chewbacca receive the medal?
It is still not clear why Lucas made changes during the revision of the script, but he eventually went back on to explain that Wookies don’t place intangible value rewards. In an interview later with the Official Star Wars Fan Club, he told that it was because Princess Leia was so short heightened, which is why she couldn’t place the medal around the Wookiee’s neck and this is why he didn’t get a medal.
It was until the 1980 comic when Chewbacca received a medal by Princess Leia in a small private ceremony organized with Leia standing on a table so that she can reach him comfortably. Even if you reject such works that are no longer part of the canon, Chewbacca was awarded a medal some two decades in the year 1997 MTV movie awards after the original film.
Upon receiving the award, Chewbacca addressed the crowd and expressed a few words of appreciation before he received a rousing round of applause.
