While there are hundreds of explanations and a million plotlines on how many superheroes got their superpowers? There was one bizarre superhero back in the 1960s who maintained his powers to fight the bad by lighting up. Yes, you read that, right!
The most bizarre Superhero
8-Man originally ran as a weekly comic series in Japan from the year 1960 to 1963; then, it became a half-hour cartoon series from 1963 to 64. The show had even moved overseas to air in America, starting in 1965. The American version had a couple of changes to the display according to American taste, was dubbed into English and re-edited, and was renamed The Eighth Man.
The Eighth Man was focused on a police detective, Peter Brady (Detective Yokoda, in the Japanese version of the superhero), who was killed on a mission. After his death, in a comic style, Bardy’s body is claimed by a scientist named Professor Genius (Professor Tani in the Japanese version of the superhero).
Professor experiments on the body, he had tried the same experiment on seven occasions before but failed. But this time his experiment work, he brought Brady back to life. The professor was able to successfully transfer Brady’s life essence into an Android with mind-blowing abilities.
While it’s accepted today that you can’t run fast, jump, fly or fight criminals and perform other amazing things if you’re a chain-smoker. But during 8-Man’s time, smoking was the power source for him.
Just like Popeye, who ate a can of spinach when he needed power. 8-man would get his energy to fight Evil from atomic energy supply, which a substance created in the laboratory and put in rolled papers, and it looked similar to cigarettes. A few puffs of his special cigarette and 8-man was charged and ready to take on the Evil.
More weird Superheroes
Though 8-Man wasn’t the only superhero that had a questionable power source at that time, Super-Chicken was another superhero that was transformed from his alter ego. Cabot Henhouse III got his superpower after drinking Souper Sauce. There was another superhero Underdog who got his superpower from popping pills
Some superheroes also had unusual sources and super weird powers. Many superhero characters did not get fame because their powers were a little too different. For example, our beloved Marvel Comic’s Squirrel Girl was a school student who had powers to control squirrels and use them to fight Evil. She also had buck teeth, 3-4 foot tail, and claws. She wanted to become Iron Man’s sidekick, but he rejected her many times, even after she saved his life- though he did tell her when she is mature enough, she could join the ultimate force Avengers.
Another Marvel character Zeitgeist had a super stomach acid, which he used to fight against Evil. But a more interesting part is how he found about his powers? After getting drunk and making out with a pretty girl, he fell ill and vomited on the girl, burning the poor girl’s face and disfiguring her. And his response to the incident was I super hope the doctors will be able to give her back her beautiful face.
